Canoe and Kayak Information

There are various places on the Driffield Navigation that are suitable for the launch and retrieval of small craft such as canoes and kayaks. The very best are:

1. On the canal at Driffield, a safe stretch between Riverhead & Town Lock suitable for novices. Best to have someone hold your craft as you enter and exit. Keep clear of the lock.

2. At Brigham Bridge, Driffield Navigation Trust is urging people to pay a £5 a day fee for launching canoes, kayaks, dinghies and trail boats. Signs and an honesty box have been installed at the bridge, and the money will go towards the upkeep of the 250-year-old navigation. The trust already has an honesty box for similar launching payments at nearby Frodingham Landing, which is also popular with canoeists and kayakers.

John Scholey, chairman of the trust, said: "We welcome people with canoes, trail boats, kayaks and dinghies at Brigham Bridge. But we respectfully request them to donate £5 per launch per day, and put their donation in the newly installed honesty box. The money will be used for the upkeep of the canal for boating, like tree trimming and installing toilet facilities at Frodingham Landing."

Over the last 20 years, the trust has spent around £450,000 on renewing or refurbishing all locks and bridges on the historic Driffield Canal. Driffield Navigation Trust is a registered charity which works with Driffield Navigation Amenities Association to keep the canal in good working order.

3. At Frodingham Landing on Frodingham Beck there is a fee of £5 per day for the launching of dinghies, canoes and any other craft. Under 17's no charge.
